The National Association of Colored People (NAACP) and Harvard University’s Center for AIDS Research (HU CFAR) are currently hosting a two-day summit spotlighting how HIV/AIDS affects the African-American community, according to an NAACP statement. Topics at the free event—called the “Forgotten Epidemic: Our Collective Response, Responsibility & Solution to the Black AIDS Crisis”—include curbing the spread of HIV/AIDS among black Americans and youth; taking aim at stigma and discrimination; and exploring attitudes about relationships and sexuality. Although blacks make up only 13 percent of the U.S. population, according to the CDC, they account for more than 50 percent of all new HIV/AIDS infections in the country. Furthermore, 70 percent of new infections among U.S. women are in black women.
