The President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has granted a total of $45 million to three different initiatives that will study the effectiveness of combination HIV prevention in Africa, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of State. Combination prevention uses several reinforcing interventions; the grants mark the largest study of this approach. The first grant will go to The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the HIV Prevention Trials Network to look at linking household-based HIV tests and universal community-based HIV treatment in Zambia and South Africa. The second will go to the Harvard School of Public Health to evaluate expanding HIV prevention interventions to larger segments of the population in Botswana. The third will go to Johns Hopkins University to look at integrated biomedical, structural and behavioral interventions in Tanzania.
