Lois Quam, the former CEO of the Medicaid and Medicare division of UnitedHealth Group, will lead the U.S. State Department’s $63 billion Global Health Initiative (GHI), the Star Tribune reports. GHI, which includes the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), combats HIV, tuberculosis and malaria around the world. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton described GHI as a “crucial component of American foreign policy.” Quam was one of Clinton’s top advisors on rural health issues from 1993 to 1994.
