In 2010, the South Africa Department of Correctional Services placed about 8,000 inmates on antiretroviral treatment and distributed 1.3 million condoms to 240 prisons, The Cape Times reports. Out of nearly 162,000 prisoners in the country, 10,370 tested HIV positive, which is about 6 percent. Estimated HIV prevalence for the general population in South Africa is about 11 percent.
