Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are on the rise among seniors across the country, the Orlando Sentinel reports. From 2005 to 2009, reported cases of syphilis and chlamydia climbed 43 percent among people 55 and older, according to analysis by the Sentinel. Increases are as high as 60 percent in South Florida, 71 percent in Central Florida and 87 percent in Arizona’s Maricopa and Pima counties. Experts attribute the rise in part to widespread use of sex-enhancing pharmaceuticals among seniors, a demographic that didn’t grow up hearing safer-sex messages. Medicare is considering whether to cover STI screenings for seniors.
