Sudan’s Islamic government is working with the United Nations to train journalists to accurately discuss the virus in the hopes of driving down the nation’s 2.3% infection rate, breaking with a long tradition of HIV silence in the public arena. HIV stigma remains severe in Sudan, where sex outside marriage is illegal and officials are debating whether or not to promote the use of condoms.
