Roman Catholic parishes in the Swiss city of Lucerne have been giving out condoms to young people as part of an HIV/AIDS awareness campaign, USA Today reports. There has been no comment from the diocese of Basel, which includes Lucerne, but a spokesman for the campaign said that the Lucerne parishes have decided that it’s time for a public debate within the church about condom use, particularly with regard to their impact on the spread of HIV/AIDS. The Catholic Church opposes any form of artificial contraception.
