Treasure Island Media is promoting a serodiscordant couple—meaning one is HIV positive and the other isn’t—who have unprotected sex as “role models,” reports the Bay Area Reporter. In a statement, the studio’s owner, Paul Morris, wrote that it is important to break down “the HIV-positive closet” and that porn can’t and shouldn’t be used for educational purposes. In the porn scene, the HIV-positive model is the receptive partner in anal sex. It’s believed they’re the first such pairing to be promoted in porn. AIDS advocates have said the studio’s absence of a prevention message while drawing attention to unprotected sexual practices may put some men at risk. The debate comes as the adult film industry’s trade association, known as the Free Speech Coalition, continues to fight California’s mandate for the universal use of condoms in porn videos.
