The anti-LGBT group Americans for Truth About Homosexuality (AFTAH) has launched a campaign to keep the ban preventing gay men from donating blood, The Washington Independent reports. Since 1983, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has banned donations from men who have ever had sex with men (and women who have sex with men who have had sex with other men). In 2010, members of Congress asked the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to lift the ban, calling it discriminatory and “scientifically unwarranted.” While HHS did not lift the ban, they have begun an extensive policy review. AFTAH is asking senators and representatives to lobby for the continuation of the ban for “the safety of Americans.” The Southern Poverty Law Center defines AFTAH as a hate group.
