Angolan handball player Filomena Trindade told college students yesterday in a “Sports and HIV/AIDS” workshop that positive athletes should be allowed to participate in sports just like anyone else. Her anti-stigma talk was in conjunction with the African Nations Men’s Basketball Championship (Afrobasket), which will be hosted by Angola later this month.

The program is part of a growing movement on the African continent—despite Angola’s position as the country with the lowest HIV rate of all—to use sports to help mobilize young people to make healthy choices and fight discrimination.
