I'm confused by the commentary in the story about "Jim Crow laws" and the discrimination this black HIV+ man faced. Kings of Kutz is a black-owned barbershop, serving a black clientele, located in a black neighborhood north of Inglewood in LA. None of those facts made it into the story, and it reads as though this was a white barbershop in the suburbs who singled out this black HIV+ man because he was black. Nothing could be further from the truth; this was black on black discrimination
I want everyone included. But, not everyone is prepared to serve everyone.... let's just be honest. I know not everyone is clean and disinfects as necessary. That's my only concern....then we have a bigger problem.
Here's an idea. All of us - whether we are poz or neg - should go to our barbers as poz. It would give them the shits... They'd then be torn between their prejudice and their thirst for paying clients... Really, I'd love it if all of us did this to them - not just to the barbers, but to any contact service that might discriminate.
What I’m not understanding is HOW on earth did the barber shop get this man’s HIV status in the 1st place?
I thought the name Nikko Briteramos sounded familiar! Damned if you do (reveal your HIV status), damned if you don't.
So maybe he has to let the barber know he's HIV Pos. Barbers should wear gloves as they cut hair anyway, but since many don't what if a blade cuts the guys head and gets on the barber? What if he's edging him with a straight razor and cuts him? Simple questions right, but someone is going to argue that I'm thinking too deep into this. We all know how HIV/AIDS can be transmitted. I do a agree that lawsuit should've paid out a lot more. Good job young man.
It's not predjuice because he's black. HIV is a disease, it becomes AIDS. It is contagious, nobody has immunity to it. It can be transfered through a scratch. Plus barbers don't just say "hey bruh you got HIV?"

ToddS. Nothing about this article would lead one to think that he was discriminated against by a white barber shop.
