A woman living with HIV in Papua New Guinea says that she has witnessed families burying their HIV positive relatives alive when they can no longer care for them.

The woman, who says that she has seen three people buried alive in the country’s remote highlands, is appealing to the government to make sure that HIV awareness reaches all parts of the country, including the rural areas.

A lack of information about the virus, as well as stigma, have been long-standing problems in the country where about two percent of the adult population is HIV positive. Papua New Guinea accounts for 90% of HIV infections in the Oceania region.
