Nick44, who mentioned Downs, ALS or any other condition? This story is about HIV only - HIV that can already be treated. As for Downs, people with Downs are beautiful and very often happy. Would they all prefer to be non Downs? I doubt it. Would all of their parents? Again I doubt that all would. Yes, of course we might want to stop ALS, MND, deformities, etc, but can even this be done without unbeknown outcomes? Anyway, Nick, when are we going on a date?

It's insane to do such gene editting because: 1. it might not work and might have unknown repurcussions in the future, 2. it might work but also might have unknown repurcussions in the future, 3. HIV is now treatable. Why can't they see that they don't know as much as they think they do? Science and medicine of today will be seen as being ill informed and wrong in many ways in the future. Humans can be so stupid - also see car pollution, nuclear weapons, unchecked human population growth, etc.

Why be alarmed? I wish my parents were rich enough to have edited my genes in embryo to make me resistant to HIV. I've never had a problem with "designer babies" especially if those babies are resistant to disease. It's better than being born with a genetic defect like Down Syndrome or ALS. If we can do a better job than "god," why not use our knowledge to stop what "he" can't?
