The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has projected that if current trends persist, half of black men who have sex with men and a quarter of Latino MSM will become HIV positive during their lifetime. After analyzing HIV diagnosis and death rates between 2009 and 2013, the CDC projected that given current trends, Americans have an average chance of 1 in 99 of contracting HIV during their lifetime. (Trends can certainly improve with concerted efforts.) One in six MSM but only 1 in 11 white MSM are projected to contract HIV. Among African Americans overall, lifetime risk is 1 in 20 for men and 1 in 48 for women. The corresponding figures for whites are 1 in 132 for men and 1 in 880 for women. Among injection drug users, the lifetime risk is 1 in 23 for women and 1 in 36 for men.
