I suffer with major depression and HIV only made things worse. The depression gets so bad that I don't eat, don't sleep or anything - and taking HIV medication is something that doesn't happen during those times. I've had a psychiatrist tell me that he was "running out of depression medication options". End of last year, my CD4 was a little more than 200. It would be great if ID doctors and psychiatrists could understand how dangerous having these two conditions can be and identify resources.
Interesting read but nothing i didn't already know. I suffer from chronic depressions and because of that me sticking with therapy for my hiv infection is difficult to say the least ! I've stopped and started so many times that it's getting dangerous. Also most meds have depression/suicidal thoughts as a side-effect which only makes my depression worse. My doctors don't even know what to do with me HAHA. They should do more research into making arv's that don't have those side-effects !!

Some medical professionals who treat persons with HIV/AIDS tend to have tunnel vision. They only see numbers on the lab results every three months. Depression symptoms are often ignored or not taken seriously. The current pandemic and the increased fear and anxiety over contracting COVID19 in persons with compromised immune systems only exascerbates symptoms of depression.
