The Rite Aid of Michigan has settled a lawsuit with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) over discrimination against a customer with HIV, according to a DOJ statement. A store pharmacist in Okemos refused to give the customer a flu shot. The DOJ found the refusal to be a violation of the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), which protects people with HIV/AIDS. The pharmacist had access to surgical gloves, but she told the customer she needed “special gloves” to give him the shot. Further, she told him to return after the store ordered the gloves. The company must pay $10,000 to the man and $5,000 in civil penalties. The company also must train its staff on the ADA and implement an antidiscrimination policy.
