When I sero-coverted in May, the Crixivan therapy was yet to arrive. I started AZT, 3TC and something else that crossed the blood/brain barrier, but was too affected by the AZT to continue - I was doing Shakespeare in the Park and decided I'd go out performing rather than being blacked out all day. The Crixivan became available that October, and the rest is gold-star history. I've since changed to a more modern double therapy, but can honestly report that my percentages are normal and healthy.

(continued) I've been on Reyetaz+Norvir plus Isentress and Sustiva for nearly ten years. For most of that time, my CD4/CD8 ratio never rose above 1.0 About a year ago my G.P. urged me to get a dpt vaccine. My CD4/CD8 ratio rose to 1.3 shortly after that vaccination. This raises an important question regarding this article and immunotherapy for HIV patients in general. But, who will investigate immunotherapies that raise CD4/CD8 ratios? What about expanding TAT vaccine studies? END

(continued) Over the next ten years on AZT+ABC I was able to stop treatment for 1-3 months at a time and ALWAYS lower viral load to undetectable. But, CD4/CD8 ratio never rose above 1.0. I finally stopped treatment for about a year and tried generic AZT+ ABC. That was the end of my 10 years of viral suppression on simply a dual nucleoside analog regimen. At no time during the use of that regimen, did my CD4/CD8 ratio rise above 1.0. (Continued on the next post)

I started AZT monotherapy treatment within 6 months of being infected in ACTG019. I received what became the standard dose. During the six year study I regularly skipped doses near the end. It was too toxic and wasn't lowering viral load. Three years after the study I added a 3tc, which did lower viral load, but caused terrible lipodytrophy. I then switched to AZT + ABC. This also lowered viral load to undetectable. Never did my CD4/CD8 ratio rise above 1.0. Continued on next posts
