This is why a therapeutic dendritic cell vaccine, which is applied to the skin, would be expected to make a positive impact on the immune response against HIV. The ACTG dragged its collective feet from 2001-2014 on testing and publishing the results from just such a vaccine called DermaVir, in the A5176 study. While the military found $1M to test a competing dendritic cell vaccine, with technology that may have come from from a company whose board member oversees ACTG trials in Chicago.

I was finally diagnosed after having this for 11 years. I worked at a hospital but never got sick. Even though my numbers were terrible,,I never once got sick. But my doctor, who didn't know much about the disease, called hospice thinking I'd be dead in 6 months. I would have thought that doctors would be more aware of these things and would not want to add to the emotional times I was having.
