Absolutely! Whether joining a gym or beginning an exercise program at home, there are several things you can do to help ensure success.

1. Enlist help. Find a friend or family member who has similar goals. Agree to hold each other accountable, maybe even draft a contract outlining your goals and be specific. “We are going to walk after dinner on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday for 10 minutes” is specific. “We need to take more walks” leavescan’t too much room for procrastination.

2. Mark your calendar. Give this the same level of importance as any appointment you would not miss. It is often difficult to make ourselves a priority in a busy life, but exercise leads to improved health and improved health benefits all aspects of our lives.

3. Be realistic. Start with small manageable goals and gradually increase them. Doing too much too soon can lead to injury and disappointment if you are unable to maintain it. By setting small manageable goals you ensure success. Goals that are too aggressive can be self-defeating.

4. State your goals as publicly as possible. If your children, partner or co-workers are part of the conversation there are more people to hold you accountable. Invite them to join you to improve their health as well.

5. Incorporate activities you enjoy. This will help ensure long-term consistency and success.

6. Think about how good it will feel. Look forward to giving your doctor a positive exercise report and setting specific goals to coincide with your next appointment. (“I’m walking 3 days per week,” etc.)
