This is like asking Somalians to support a higher minimum wage in the US.
BRAVO to these groups for bucking the trend of finger-wagging sanctimony that POZ bloggers have exemplified on this issue. Prevention and Treatment are NOT in competition with each other, they complement each other...and Truvada is not a finite resource like uranium. the PrEP fight represents a new schism in the HIV community, between those who seek the widest possible range of options to fight HIV, and those who presume to declare what prevention tools OTHERS may use! SHAME on POZ and the AHF!
just as I would have able to afford or my insurance company would have provided me with antibodics, before I became HIV +, people who have not been diagnosed with HIV are often able to afford PerPs
I'm sorry, but did I miss the part where mainstream gay sites started advocating for ADAP funding and shared responsibility in prevention? Does "The Advocate" advocate for a cure? Why is this our concern? A big part of the propblem is that poz people stopped advocating for poz needs in favor of socially preferred issues like prevention. The result? 10,000 souls on wait lists while "POZ Magazine" and its competitors publish a sign on to expedite the approval of a sex pill for the wealthy.
I'm sorry, but I cannot in any way see how these organizations can be writing this letter! There are numerous HIV positive people throughout the country that cannot afford HAART at all and now these groups are moving to create a whole new group of people to "need" meds? We need to focus on getting the drugs to the men, women, and children who need them to NOT DIE!
As a long-time activist and supporter of the Denver Principles, I endorse this letter. There are both promising efficacy data and very real questions that remain to be answered about PreP's effectiveness/risks in everyday life conditions, its cost/funding and its proper role in HIV prevention. But it is neither right nor smart to try to block PreP from even being considered and pilot tested by pressuring its maker and the FDA, as a few who claim to speak for us are unfortunately trying to do.

I guess those opposed to PrEP believe that more HIV-infected people will result in more money for ADAP and more pressure for a cure. Are any of the letter's signers NOT already working for more funding for ADAP, cure research, etc.? Should we assume that those opposed to PrEP access are doing their part to increase the number of poz people in the world? It's like Somalians demanding that the rest of the world live in the squalor and chaos in which they live. Oh yeah, that's what they ARE doing.
