Nogames, you should not be denied being a transplant candidate based solely on your HIV status. Your overall health is the deciding factor, not your HIV status. Lushisluv, Anyone can sign up as an organ donor regardless of whether they are HIV positive or negative. You register in your state just as anyone else would. You should also let your wishes of being an organ donor known to family and your physician or having a living will/advance directive that explicitly dictates your wish to donate.
This article gives me hope. How can I get in touch with Mr. Garcia? On 4/13/18 I was told by University Hospital in San Antonio that I was not a candidate for a Kidney transplant because I am hiv+. Is this fair? Is my life not worth a second chance? Any direction or help would be greatly appreciated. #hopeful
Dear Gary, Thank you for sharing your story. It filled me with hope knowing that HIV+ individuals can have transplants and be organ donors. I just hit the big 47. I tested pos at 21 yrs old and have never had the opportunity to donate blood. When I got my new drivers licence in the early 90s organ donor was no longer an option.I'm not sure of how to go about getting on a list to be a donor but will ask my primarycare Dr on my next visit. Thank you all for your comments and support. I stepped out to share my story to give others hope. Nogames718o that Hospital may not to be educated enough to do transplant. Some hospitals are not aware of the Hope act. You can request for a 2nd opinion and contact other hospitals who may do HIV transplants. Please let me know what i can do to help. You have to be an advocate for yourself. My first doctor stated she would not refer for a transplant, so I fought and had to advocate for myself.
