How can we arrive at these conclusions? How can we give credit to the gel for the 39% infection free women when we cannot even say for sure that they were exposed to HIV to begin with? All though they had been called high risk individuals they had managed to remain infection free until the begining of the study, infact why are we not blaming the gel for the 61 % infections. In da past women have been warmed about gel n fluids that they use in the vagina as they can acuse dryness and tears.

This gel you are talking about what are some side effects.I accept that the drug you want to remove actually causes numbness. In fact you should tackle this research quickly enough to help the suffering lot.We should not just talk of reducing only let the be an eliminating/curing.

Why scientists tried with only 1% of Tenofovir and not have different arms,3% 5% 10% etc.It took 2.5 years with the gel at 1% to get 39% efficacy. Now they are saying they might increase the % of the drug and maybe add another drug to Tenofovir. To me,this is a waste of time and $$. To see higher results we will have to wait another 3 years or so. They should have a multi-center trial of at least 5 different levels. It's ridiculous. They need to be more aggressive. People get infected every day.

thabang, The results are considered sound, given that ALL women in the study received HIV prevention counseling and either the tenofovir gel (treatment group) or inactive placebo (control group) - both delivered via identical applicators. It was a double-blind study, thus nobody knew which volunteers were in the treatment vs. control group.

what i would like to know is how can they come to a conclusion that its the gel that is reducing the HIV contraction. I think that conclusion is weak, since the women were given councelling, and they were probably using condoms more frequently, which would lead to the decrease the rate of HIV contraction. what I would also like to know hat did they use as their controls, as to me,this seems like some statistical error.
