Persons on HAART get gum disease, lung cancer and COPD. Complement C3 now linked to gum disease (Lambris). Complement system known to be involved in lung cancer and COPD. HIV promotes C3 in neurons and astrocytes. Is improper complement activation behind the peridontitis-lung cancer-COPD constellation?

Interestingly the study is from Mt. Sinai in NY-the region that only began to be aware of radon anasbestos in houses, and an area of fairly high air pollution. While this is not an environmental study it seems clear that the patients who got lung cancer were likely to have lived around smokers (not clear if accounted for) and possibly lived in homes. I think environmental factors clearly are going to hit an immune compromised person more than a person with full immunity-having HIV is not fun.
