Sean, Study volunteers who were randomized to immediate PrEP received tenofovir for two years; those who waited nine months were exposed to 15 months of tenofovir exposure. You are right -- these data support the short-term safety of tenofovir in an HIV-uninfected population of men, they do not speak to the potential long-term risks of daily tenofovir monotherapy as PrEP. -David

David, You don't indicate over what period of time the people in the study were followed. Calling these treatments "safe" over the course of a year or two or three is one thing; labeling them safe without referencing the time frame over which they were studied presents a misleading picture. The only reference in this article to a timeframe is the note that one arm of the study wasn't given their tenofovir or placebo until nine months into the study.
