osiric - Something tells me we largely have to thank pharmaceutical lobbyists for these brilliant new treatment guidelines.
Did I miss the part where the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is going to full fund treatment for everyone who meets these criteria?
So shouldn't treatment focus less on viral load and more on clearing out the HIV reservoirs, for example, through enemas, gut health (40-60% of our immune system is located in the GI tract) and not on removing HIV from the bloodstream with toxic and eventually lethal drug cocktails?
What about treating the inflammation then? Doesn't HAART therapy cause it's own kind of inflammation, or least damage to mitochondria, bone marrow, liver, kidneys, and heart? From what I understand, heart disease is now the main killer of treated HIV patients. And on another note, HAART is apparently not able to kill the HIV found in various bodily reservoirs... So being undetectable simply means that there is no virus in the blood, but it's still reproducing elsewhere and causing inflammation.
I've been livin with hiv for 22 years. I don't know what a ARV is and don't realy care. My cd4's are 625 & undetecable. Do I want to take a chance with another med ? I'll have to think about it. Your all lucky. Sence the coma, I find it hard to retai all of this. Kudos to thoes of you that tell your stories. I find peace in most of em.
DC, the logic goes that untreated HIV (even when viral loads are below 10,000) leads to constant immune activation and inflammation in the body. Inflammation, it turns out, has been associated with a number of diseases, such as cardiovascular, neurological, liver-related, kidney-related and various metabolic problems. We know that markers of immune activation are reduced when ARV therapy is used, hence the rationale for early treatment. Clinical trials are needed to confirm this, though.
How exactly does untreated HIV go about causing non-AIDS disorders?
What about cases where HIV viral loads remain consistently under 10,000 without ARVs? There are HIV negative people with viral loads in that range.
