It's important to know that every single cell in our body, from feet to head, has a VITAMIN D receptor. This means that all our cells need VITAMIN D to function at their best. That's why it's important to spend enough time in the sun or it's good to use (not abuse) a tanning machine. Just be sure not to get sunburned and avoid sunscreens with chemical filters (they provoke cancer). On the contrary sunscreen with mineral filters are safe in the sun (never use sunscreen in a solarium).
It is good to see what long term survivors have known for a long time. In 1994 Dr. Mariana Baum found that HIV (+) people needed 6 to 25 times the RDA levels of essential nutrients to get healthy cellular levels of these nutrients, some of which are correlative with a decrease in infections and increase in survival. It's nice to see at least one piece of the puzzle has been seriously studied, and perhaps with more research on other essential nutrients, better outcomes will be attained.
