Colorado ASOs, reproductive rights groups and family planning centers are finding new and fun ways to introduce condoms to local Latina youth, including distributing condom lollipops, earrings and even keychain holders.

“Some young people like to play with the condoms and use them as balloons,” says Jacinta Montoya, executive director of Colorado Organization for Latina Opportunity and Reproductive Rights (COLOR). “I’m OK with that because it helps them to become more familiar with handling condoms in the future.”

With recent studies revealing that Latina girls between the ages of 15 and 17 account for 62 percent of all babies born to teen mothers in the state, getting this population more comfortable with condoms is more important than ever—especially since only 75 percent of Latino students receive HIV-prevention information in school compared with 87 percent of their Caucasian classmates.
