I have tried to opt out of mail order and was told I have to use it or I will have to pay in full out of my own pocket. I live in Missouri and my insurance company is WageWorks and the specialty pharmacy is Caremark pharmacy. Is this legal? I am really upset and I'm out of my meds, have been out for 3 days. I'm trying to get it but it's one thing after another.
Forcing the use of mail order Rx should be illegal. It is no different then your auto insurance forced you to take your insured car repairs to their shop. I know the auto insurance is not allowed to do that here in Michigan. If you have the right to chose which auto shop does your repairs then we sure as hell should have the choice to get our medications from where we chose. Especially when there are cases when the Mail order Rx is more expensive then your local pharmacy.
I have been fighting OPTUM RX for years over the excessive burden they place on acquiring my meds. First, their on line site allows one to order all of their meds, but in reality they just don't process the order and it is not until you call that you have not received your order do they tell you that some how you should have known better than expecting the on line system could work for ordering those drugs they have determined as speciality drugs. Half the reps just hang up on you!
I am having problems with meds too, I have OptmRx from United Health Care and ADAP, a completely nightmare almost everytime something goes wrong and a couple of times my medicine didn't get it on time, I wish we can have something like that here in NYC like in CA
I am going through this with Curascript right now. I am scared and frustrated, my last pill will be taken tomorrow...and after that, who knows?
I have friends that use mail in pharmacies for all their meds and like it very much, but I do not think mandating mail order pharmacies is a good choice. Some of us love having the contact with our pharmacist and consider the pharmacist a essential part of our health care. You just do not get that one on one attention from a mail order pharmacy that you do from a local or even chain pharmacy you can walk into.
Now here is a change to the Affordable Care Act that should be implemented. It should be illegal in all states to require the use of mail order.. an easy opt out should be mandatory

How can I opt out of specialty pharmacy? My insurance company said I have to use that pharmacy or pay for it full price. I'm very upset that my privacy doesn't matter.
