AIDS activist group ACT UP Philadelphia and former Philadelphia prisons commissioner Leon King will be honored June 3 for bringing condoms to the city’s prisons, the Philadelphia Daily News reports (philly.com, 6/2).

To stem the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, King and ACT UP collaborated to make condoms—once considered contraband in Philadelphia prisons—available to inmates.

“You would think that a prison commissioner would not be on the same side, would not necessarily have common ground with an activist group,” said Jane Shull, executive director of AIDS service organization Philadelphia FIGHT, said in the article.

King and ACT UP Philadelphia will be honored at the opening reception for Philadelphia FIGHT’s annual AIDS education month, held each June.
