Actor Zachary Quinto, best known as Spock in the Star Trek reboot, has joined the Foundation for a National AIDS Monument board of directors, according to a press release from the organization.

The monument will be located in Los Angeles, in the heart of West Hollywood Park, which is undergoing an $86 million renovation. After a reviewing process, the foundation board chose Daniel Tobin of Urban Arts Projects to design the monument.

In addition to Quinto, two other men also joined the board: William Morris Endeavor board member Mark Itkin and marketing executive Tom Whitman.

“I am excited to be part of the AIDS Monument Foundation board of directors, particularly because while the mission is to honor the lives of those lost as well as celebrating the people who fought and continue to fight for change and an end to HIV/AIDS, it looks ahead to keep the conversation about HIV current and relevant,” Quinto said in the press release.

Quinto made headlines last year after an interview with Out magazine, pictured above. In the article, he made controversial comments about HIV and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP):

“I think there’s a tremendous sense of complacency in the LGBT community,” Quinto says, citing the rising number of HIV infections in adolescents. “AIDS has lost the edge of horror it possessed when it swept through the world in the ’80s. Today’s generation sees it more as something to live with and something to be much less fearful of. And that comes with a sense of, dare I say, laziness.”
