The rare and highly contagious STD syphilis is making a comeback in New York City. The 2007 count is not that much higher than last year at 260 cases (10 of them women), but experts fear that even a small increase could usher in new HIV infections because HIV is more easily transmitted among people with syphilis.

City officials also believe that this eruption may be due to a increase in the number of bisexual men having unprotected sex with both men and women. The last significant outbreak in NYC was in the 1990s.
