(Cont'd.) To say "the bucket has holes in it," the bucket being the PrEP concept, doesn't make one a "bucket denialist." Using the word "denial" here seems inflammatory and irresponsible to me. MSM aren't mentioned because they're not the risk-population where PrEP ISN'T being implemented effectively; omitting to mention them is logical, if discretionary. Ryan's over-fondness for adjectives like "soaring" and "plummeting" doesn't improve the reportage. HIV is very important, but the sexual
I read this article, then read the Weinstein, et al. letter in full, as well as the AHF ad "attacking" PrEP. I also read two other POZ articles by Benjamin Ryan on the same topic. I'm a gay HIV+ man who doesn't take PrEP because my lifestyle doesn't require it, but I certainly take a lot of meds. I also had Hep B and C, leading to cirrhosis. I think Ryan is off-base in his criticism of AHF/Weinstein, who is NOT saying PrEP doesn't work, only that it's not enough.
What is the grand poobah going to say when they come up with a vaccine? Scream that everybody will increase risky sexual activity? As for prep not reaching those who need it the most, how about fix THAT instead of whining about others use of it. Weinstein really needs to shut up and take a vacay on all that salary he makes on the back of PLWA.
The talk about drug resistance has been around as long as the virus. What I find amusing that is how this article downplays resistance while at the top of the web page, there is an ad for Prescobix that states " Missed doses cause drug resistance!"...LOL

(cont'd. again) sexual/public health needs of MSM (and everyone else) go far beyond preventing HIV; decreased focus on condom-use increases exposure to other very serious pathogens like syphilis and viral hepatitis that can and do devastate human health. Blithely relying on PrEP as a substitute for condoms makes sense as to HIV, but not as to the rest. I think this is basic to Weinstein's message, and I think he's right. PrEP does work, for the privileged, adherent few; great, but not enough.
