The World Health Organization (WHO) has drastically lowered its earlier projections of deaths related to HIV/AIDS, according to Agence France-Presse. In the next few years, deaths will continue to rise, from 2.2 million in 2008 to a maximum of 2.4 million in 2012—but then they’ll start to decline.

Earlier WHO estimates predicted 6.5 million HIV/AIDS deaths in 2030. The new estimate is 1.2 million.

The revised forecast appears in WHO’s Global Burden of Disease publication. Last year, the United Nations lowered its estimates on the number of people with HIV/AIDS; the WHO’s new predictions are based on those new numbers
