Thursday, April 25, is World Malaria Day, a global awareness day for efforts to control the disease. In the past decade, malaria deaths have been cut by one-third in Africa and by 50 percent in 35 out of 53 countries affected by the disease. Cuts to anti-malaria funding worldwide, however, are threatening the progress that has been made. HIV and malaria combined can be especially dangerous. HIV weakens the immune system’s ability to fight off malaria, while malaria increases HIV viral load.
