Thanks for your blog Aundaray. Swallowing those three little pills is the hardest thing I have ever had to do. It took me months to finally get myself to take them regularly and to not be bothered about it. Now those pills have become my life (literally) and I don't mind taking them daily. I just keep in mind that I want to have the best quality of life I can possibly have and those pills allot me that life. Thanks again, Tan

Good article! However, I thought that after receiving the diagnosis it's best to start the antiretroviral regimen asap.

I was diagnosed in 1995 and I was put on meds right then. It was a lifesaving thing!! I am like a lot of HIV patients because I hate taking the meds, but on the other hand, I love my life too! I am now undetectable and living a good life, so like the article says, all people living with HIV ARE NOT THE SAME. By all means, PLEASE check with your HIV doctor before deciding not to take meds!!

Starting medical treatment for HIV as soon as possible after the virus has been detected is BY FAR the best way to control the infection. Medical treatment will quickly reduce the viral load to scientific undetectability in one's body and the T-cell count will begin to rise showing that the immune system is recovering. Taking the antiretroviral medication seems to have the additional benefit of providing some protection against other viruses and ailments as well. So, there is absolutely NO good reason for not starting medical treatment RIGHT AWAY.

Great stuff! When I was diagnosed, my very life was in jeopardy, so taking meds was not a choice. A lot of this article pertains to me, still, since I truly believe that my HIV status forced me to start putting my health first.

Thank you for being a rare and persistent voice of advocacy for HIV+ people in a magazine which has clearly lost its way. I think the direction science is going is pretty obvious, if not completely settled--early treatment is the best thing for the health of the positive person, and the best form of prevention we know of. We need more support for HIV treatment, not reasons why we should delay it.
