I disagree Jake...nations with national health care have lower rates of HIV infection, not higher rates. The reason??? prevenitive care. Obama has failed in his promises on HIV...needle exchange, for instance, is log-jammed in congress and may include restrictions that make federal funding unusable. Frieden may be a good start, but Obama needs to exhibit some leadership.

while good intentioned the central planners never ever deliver or satisfy. If you want real satisfaction you must attain it for yourself. Until we can divert the present national movement towards socialism and being saved by messiah like leaders we will remain in this hopeless state of victimhood. The only real way to solve the problem is tough love, and no one has the courage, the balls or intellect to make that case. Looking for any politician, including Mr. Obama to change human nature is naive if not foolish. Where in human history has this worked out? You compare smoking to hiv but arrive at the wrong conclusion . Government does not stop people from smoking, people stop themselves through hard work and self discipline. Its a human problem the government is not equipped to solve. The reason people quit smoking is they continue to see people die or become ill and there is a consensus now thanks to the drugs that HIV is no big deal or as you say no more funerals. So the only real visible reason people have not to get HIV is the cost of treatment. I maintain if we start a free health care system,HIV infections will grow. So the next step will be for the national run health system to deny treatment for HIV when infections and cost soar. Just wait. You will all rue the day you asked the government into your lives. we are screwed. buy gold

Thanks for expressing the frustration that many of us have (myself included) with the fractions within the AIDS advocacy community. The state vs state fighting for funding, the anarchistic, nepotistic and ego driven ASO's. Let's hope that we can all come to the same conclusion - that we need a National AIDS policy. The old "State vs State" just isn't working anymore.

Had the same reaction. Looks like the only ones pushing an agenda around this selection process are those that may not have been included in it. I too agree with Dab. We've got far too many new dx's coming in with extremely high level and complex accuities to get caught up in turf wars. Keep the client at the center of the wheel!

Excellent blog Peter. I could not agree with you more. I can tell you on a local and state level, Florida has grassroots HIV organizations trying our best in the areas of HIV awareness, education and prevention. But most of us are run on private donations and with the current economy most are struggling to keep their website up and doors open. I join you in the hope that we can turn around the horrible HIV infection rates. I am seeing far too many late stage diagnosis in our state. Far too many American men and women are dying as a result in an age when we can save lives if they are diagnosed in time. Wishing you health, hope and happiness. big bear hug, Dab Garner
