Shawn, I'm a 1992 graduate of WHS who checks out the News-Virginian every couple weeks. Imagine my surprise today to find a classmate not only giving the commencement address but knocking it out of the park. Congratulations doing a much better job than Marshall Coleman (also a WHS grad and former GOP candidate for governor)did at my graduation!!! Would be great to connect and chat about that B+ from Entertainment Weekly. Hopefully you have another book in you to go for the coveted A from the literary reviewers at EW. All the best, Clinton (CB) Fisher
Dear Shawn and Gwenn, Thank you for being the commencement speaker at my nephews’ graduation in Waynesboro, Virginia this past weekend. You’ll broke the mold for me regarding Waynesboro. You see, my nephew is the product of a troubled divorce situation. His mother and he have resided in Waynesboro with her family since he was young, and let’s say the resident influences in his life left me believing Waynesboro to be a backward set of rightwing narrow-minded community of Falwell followers. Now along comes Shawn Decker and destroys my misperception (crack). I never thought I would ever hear the words HIV or AIDS in Waynesboro. Sometimes it’s a relief to be proven wrong. Your openness in sharing your experience regarding HIV/AID I know will slow this pandemic. Thank you for not only proving me wrong but blowing my misperception of Waynesboro out of the water. I wish you much success in everything you and Gwenn wish to pursue. Gene Schrecengost Raleigh-Durham, NC.
