Thanks or your comments but if you re-read the blog the barbershop is partnered with a community agency that provides the counseling piece. I think in a perfect world everyone would go to a clinic but the reality is that for some there is so much stigma going to a clinic that many won't go at all, leaving them walking around undiagnosed To truly tackle this we have to shift our thinking and the way we tackle this disease. I feel the barbershop does this as it gives people who have a fear of being stigmatized of going to a clinic, a space and place they feel more comfort in. So rest assure the counseling is still there and better yet people in hard hit communities are learning their status. Thanks again for responding and the support!
Sincerelly, its ridiculus and non sense get hiv test outuside a clinic or a health facility. Get test positive means you need be monitored, receive professional information and guidance. Being tested is the first step however getting a positive response can not believe that a barber has the professional qualifications to deal with now patient's HIV virus. It would be trivializing a serious thing so whose end is death. 90% of people tested with HIV die from complications arising from HIV which had an active part. The remaining 10% is to die natural deaths, not directly related to HIV. I am HIV + for over twenty years ... of which as at 80 begame's + 99% are dead.
D.
I think it's a great idea to have people tested and get a hair cut at the same time. It like having a barbershop with no borders. The person giving the test would have to be qualified and certified to do the testing.
