Actually, AIDS is an acronym for "acquired immunodeficiency syndrome" so the "I" and the "D" are coming from one word, not two.

Each word of the abbreviation AIDS also arrives from a separate word (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrom), so why no periods between the letters like in H.I.V.?
