I haven't read "Cured," but based on your description here it sounds like it has a lot in common with Candice Pert's book "Molecules of Emotion," published in 1997. Candace Pert, the scientist who discovered the opiate receptor, worked diligently to get her discovery Peptide T; a non-toxic approach to block HIV binding, into test trials. She goes into great detail discussing the process of how projects get funding and how ego's and the establishment can impede the process. "Molecules of Emotion" is an excellent book and I highly recommend anyone dealing with HIV/AIDS read it.
