You raise a good point, but suggesting that people tell their doctor to give them an HIV test still misses people like me what had never engaged in risky conduct and had no idea I needed to be tested. It also missed my late husband who, at 77, died of double pneumonia without ever being tested (I now believe what killed him was AIDS-related pneumonia. Doctors also have to be educated to look for HIV in older patients. Testing my husband when he was sick would have saved me from nearly dying.
