Mike, Cindy Stine coordinates Sero's network of incarcerated people with HIV. She worked with a number of other organizations to put together a database of nearly 30,000 individuals who are incarcerated (not necessarily people with HIV) and we sent Turn It Up! to them directly, individual copies. A tremendous expense, of course, but it meant we could really get the resource into the hands of people who need it the most Thanks are due to to H. van Ameringen Foundation, Tom Viola and his amazing team at Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and the Elton John AIDS Foundation (which has taken a tremendous leadership role in HIV stigma and empowerment issues, particularly for people who are incarcerated and transgender individuals).
That is one terrific self-help magazine for HIV poz folks in jails and prisons. Sure wish it was available when I was incarcerated in 2001/2002 in the San Francisco County jail. I hope this magazine is widely distributed inside jails and prisons, reaching the many folks who need it. Thanks for including one of my tips about maintaining good mental health while behind bars.
Thank you, POZ - The spirit of POZ infuses Turn It Up! at every point, because both are dedicated to empowering people to fight for our own health and wellness—behind bars and on the street.
