The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone ages 13 to 64 get tested for HIV, regardless of perceived risk.

You should get tested if any of the factors below apply to your sexual history:


  • You are sexually active, with three-plus sexual partners in the past year.
  • You had condomless sex with someone who is HIV positive.
  • You had condomless sex with someone whose HIV status is unknown.
  • You have been sexually assaulted.
  • You exchanged sex for food, shelter, drugs or money.
  • You have been diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection.
