HIV/AIDS and Aging - A World AIDS Day Commemoration

Rutgers University School of Nursing, in partnership with the Rutgers University School of Public Health, will hold its Second Annual World AIDS Day commemoration. This year marks the 30th anniversary of World AIDS Day, a global event honoring individuals who live everyday with HIV/AIDS, and paying tribute to those who have lost their lives to this epidemic. World AIDS Day also calls attention to the medical and scientific advancements that promote quality of life for those with HIV/AIDS, as researchers continue to work toward eradication of the disease in our lifetime.

Thirty years ago, HIV/AIDS was a life-limiting illness but today, HIV/AIDS is a chronic but manageable condition for most, which presents its own medical, psychological and social challenges.  The day-long event starts with a morning Continuing Education Workshop to help practitioners assist their patients and clients in navigating medical care, mental health, relationships, and retirement lifestyle planning during their older years, to heighten physical well-being and resilience.

During the program artwork will be on display, featuring works created by residents of Broadway House for Continuing Care  a Newark-based residence for individuals living with HIV/AIDS that uses an approach “designed to combat the disease, sharpen the mind, and heal the spirit.”
