ABOUT THE NATIONAL AIDS MEMORIAL GROVE

The mission of the National AIDS Memorial Grove (“the Grove”) is to provide, in perpetuity, a place of remembrance so that the lives of people who died from AIDS are not forgotten and the story is known by future generations. It was conceived in 1988 by a small group of San Franciscans whose community had been devastated by AIDS and who wanted to create a space dedicated to all lives touched by AIDS.

Twenty-five years later, the physical and spiritual landscape of the Grove has changed dramatically, as has the landscape of HIV/AIDS epidemic. More than 170,000 volunteer hours have created and sustained what is now an award-winning, model section of Golden Gate Park. As our nation’s ONLY federally-designated memorial to AIDS, the Grove has a significant national calling and moral responsibility to place those lives in the larger historical context of the American social response to AIDS.

The National AIDS Memorial Grove currently has an annual budget of $1.2M with three full time employees, in addition to fundraising and communications consultants. Today, the Grove operates under the fiscal sponsorship of the Tides Center and has an active and committed Board of Directors of 17 members with diverse professional and personal backgrounds.
