POSITION:

Director of Global Communications

ORGANIZATION:

Prevention Access Campaign

Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U): A person living with HIV (PLHIV) who is on treatment and has an undetectable viral load cannot transmit HIV through sex.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:

With U=U, HIV treatment has transformed the HIV prevention landscape.” World Health Organization (WHO)

U=U is the foundation for being able to end the epidemic.” Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, Director, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)

Prevention Access Campaign is the leading site for U=U information, resources, and news.” The United States President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR)

U=U sets us free.” Maria Mejia, International HIV Activist

Prevention Access Campaign (“PAC”) launched the Undetectable = Untransmittable (“U=U”) campaign in 2016 to build an international science-based consensus to confirm U=U and disseminate the groundbreaking science through a global network of partners. Our collaborative advocacy, education, and communications work has resulted in historic global changes to the official risk assessments of HIV sexual transmission. Together, we’re changing the narrative about living and loving with HIV.

In five years, the community-led U=U campaign has grown into an unprecedented global health and human rights movement with over 1000 official partners, including health ministries, research associations, industry partners, and community-based organizations in 105 countries. U=U has been endorsed by the global medical and scientific community including the WHO, PEPFAR, UNAIDS, NIH, and the CDC as a life-changing, stigma-busting, and transmission-stopping fact. This rapid expansion is a testament to the passion and power of PLHIV coming together with scientists, public health officials, and other allies to improve lives and bring an end to the dual epidemics of HIV and HIV stigma.

Sharing knowledge about U=U is game changing because of the many ways it improves the lives of PLHIV and plays a foundational role in ending HIV epidemic:

  • Quality of life for people living with HIV: Transforms the social, sexual, and reproductive lives of PLHIV by freeing them from the shame and fear of sexual transmission to their partners.
  • HIV stigma: Dismantles the HIV stigma that has been destroying lives and impeding progress in the field since the beginning of the epidemic.
  • Treatment goals: Reduces the anxiety associated with testing, and encourages people living with HIV to start and stay on treatment to stay healthy and prevent transmission.
  • Universal access: Offers a public health rationale to increase access and remove barriers to treatment, care, and diagnostics to save lives and prevent new transmissions.

We work in close partnership with activists, NGOs, international agencies, health ministries, researchers, industry partners, and other stakeholders to ensure the U=U science is integrated into policies, clinical guidelines, and health communications worldwide.
