POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Bienestar Human Services is collaborating with California State University, Long Beach, in the implementation of a program entitled, ¡Salud a la Vida! (Cheers to Life!). This program is funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The purpose of this program is to deliver integrated prevention interventions on the topics of HIV, hepatitis C, alcohol abuse and drug abuse to Latino young adults (18-24 years of age) in the area of Long Beach, California. Under the direction of the Director of Research and Evaluation, the Health Advocate will carry out the duties of the position in coordination with the program staff at California State University, Long Beach.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Conduct a needs assessment regarding substance abuse (SA), HIV prevention (HIV) and hepatitis C (HCV) prevention with young Latino adults ages 18-24 in the area of Long Beach.
  2. Conduct focus groups with the target population.
  3. Contribute to the development of a strategic plan focused on creating a culturally and linguistically relevant integrated SA, HIV and HCV prevention intervention based on the findings of the needs assessment.
  4. Implement the intervention with a minimum of 150 young Latino adult community participants in Long Beach.
  5. Help to assess the effectiveness of the intervention.
  6. Prepare program reports and keep accurate up-to-date records and documentation.
  7. Attend required trainings and presentations.
  8. Attend program staff meetings as required.
  9. Assist with other program-related activities as may be needed.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

  1. Minimum of a bachelor degree from an accredited academic institution.
  2. Knowledge of the Latino community.
  3. Experience and interpersonal skills working with culturally and socially diverse community groups, including the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities.
  4. Excellent interviewing skills.
  5. Excellent interpersonal skills
  6. Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and Spanish (must be fully bilingual).
  7. Able to work independently and efficiently and have excellent organizational skills with attention to detail.
  8. Ability to prioritize assignments and to manage several activities effectively under deadlines.
  9. Self-motivated, a problem solver and able to organize job assignments.
  10. Strong writing skills.
  11. Proficiency in MS Windows and Excel.
  12. Able to meet agency job work hours, transportation and employment requirements
