Summary: The HIV Services Counselor will be responsible for providing rapid HIV testing, counseling and referrals to individuals accessing substance use treatment and other prevention services at The Center. They will support the Director of HIV Services in managing HIV testing quality assurance. They will provide sexual health screenings, health and PrEP/PEP education, crisis intervention, and assistance coordinating linkage to care, along with assisting in providing the provision of substance use and prevention services at The Center.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct rapid HIV testing sessions with individuals accessing substance use treatment and other prevention services at The Center. 
  • Provide pre- and post-test counseling, which includes health and PrEP/PEP education, and delivering positive test results to people who are newly diagnosed. 
  • Follow and monitor all quality assurance policies and procedures. 
  • Complete regular and timely documentation of services, entering data into appropriate databases.
  • Work collaboratively with other program staff to coordinate service delivery and ensure linkage to care, including linking clients to the HIV Case Manager.
  • Support program counselors via intake assessment provision along with individual, couples, and family substance use treatment and prevention interventions (up to 15 clients).
  • Develop and provide supplemental HIV support groups, including therapeutic and psycho-educational groups including maintaining group records (up to two groups).
  • Support program directors and coordinators in regular review of client charts including HIV testing documentation, ensuring compliance with all laws, licensing and funding source requirements.
  • Participate in all relevant Center staff and grant funding related meetings, along with regular meeting with the Director of HIV Services for supervisory and program planning purposes.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements:
  • CASAC or advanced clinical degree required; LMSW or LCSW - SIFI field certification to supervise students a plus.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in the provision of behavioral, HIV and/or substance use treatment services. Prior knowledge of PrEP/PEP preferred. Training in Alere testing a plus.
  • Knowledge of behavioral health resources in the greater New York City area and treatment regulations and programs; knowledge of electronic medical recordkeeping a plus.
  • Strong leadership, administrative, organization, and written/verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with a wide range of personalities.
  • Commitment to inclusive, multicultural programming; prior experience working with in coalitions with diverse communities and an understanding of intersectional oppressions.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the issues, needs and interests of LGBT youth, adults, families and community, including knowledge of the spectrum of gender identity and transgender issues.
  • A strong commitment to the mission of The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center.
