Job Summary 

The Peer Ambassador is responsible for organizing and implementing outreach and education for youth and community partners. This person will be responsible for facilitating Peer Education Center (PEC) workshops, trainings, and discussions.  The position is also responsible for maintaining outreach logs, data entry, and maintaining the PEC. Some roles will be asked to provide HIV and STI testing and general health and wellness related education in one-on-one and group sessions, conducting specific outreach to targeted populations as dictated by programmatic needs.  This person will work closely with Peer Representatives and Community Messengers. The position reports to the Manager of Youth Health Initiatives. 

  

 

Primary Essential Duties

  • Plans PEC activities with other WWH programs and staff
  • Greets and guides all visitors to appropriate areas on WWH’s Youth Services offices
  • Manages the front desk at the PEC, including sign-in, answering phones, and directing youth to activities 
  • Engages potential REALTalkDC participants in a dialogue about the program and recruit them for REALTalkDC activities/cohorts 
  • Facilitates workshops for other youth serving organizations, PEC visitors, and REALTalkDC Community Messengers
  • Enters data from outreach tracking logs into an Excel spreadsheet
  • Assists staff in WWH event planning
  • Attends and actively participates in required trainings

     

Knowledge, Skills, and Talents Required

  • Ability to conduct sensitive, empathetic interviews that respect the dignity and diversity of clients. 
  • Excellent face to face interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively educate, treat and counsel clients from diverse educational, social and economic backgrounds
  • Completion of Peer Representative trainings and required activities
  • Experience working on youth projects
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Excellent presentation, facilitation, and training skills
  • Knowledge of HIV and STIs
  • Knowledge of Washington, DC resources
  • Knowledge of outreach and community education
  • Ability to work flexible hours in a very active and dynamic environment (afternoons and weekends)
  • Ability to adapt, design, and implement program ideas into workable projects
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office

 

Education and Experience Required

  • Experience working with an ethnically, culturally and racially diverse work staff preferred; ability to work harmoniously with diverse groups of individuals required. 

 

Working Conditions:

 

Working conditions for this position are normal for an office environment.  Individual may be required to work evenings and / or weekends and organization events.
