Summary

NMAC (formerly known as the National Minority AIDS Council) is looking for a Press Coordinator to assist with the agency’s communications activities, primarily NMAC’s media relations and website management. 

The ideal candidate must be an innovative self-starter who can work with little supervision. They must be able to work closely with the Director of Communications and other agency staff to ensure timely completion of projects at a high-quality level.

Candidate should have at least five years of media relations experience and established press contacts in political press and minority press, including LGBTQ press, African-American press, and Spanish-language press. Capitol Hill experience a plus.

The incumbent will ensure meaningful community engagement, coordination of programmatic activities, and support execution of stated deliverables in a timely manner to support People Living with HIV and communities greatly impacted by HIV. They will demonstrate a commitment to the Black Lives Matter movement, race justice, gender justice, and language justice.

Good writing and editing ability essential. Must understand and have experience using Wordpress, Mail Chimp, and other cloud-based communication platforms.

The ideal candidate understands the power of words, how to speak truth to power, and the nuances of Washington talk and has a familiarity with the Denver Principles and UNAIDS Terminology Guidelines. Strategically help to shape messages about HIV, people of color, people living with HIV, biomedical HIV prevention, and how race impacts our ability to end the HIV epidemic in America. 

NMAC is looking for leaders from the communities that are hardest hit by HIV. People living with HIV, minorities, and LGBTQ+ candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Develop and implement NMAC’s media relations strategy with Director of Communications. 
  • Write press materials, including press releases, media statements, and oped pieces. 
  •  Pitch story and interview ideas to press contacts. Respond to inquiries from media. 
  • Manages NMAC websites; works with NMAC divisions to make updates as needed and works with consultant on more advanced updates.
  • Develop new press contacts.
  • Contribute ideas for new approaches and tactics.
  • Good with deadlines, particularly on short notice.
  • Understanding of social media and their analytics.
  • Understanding of cultural competency and its relevance to media relations.
  • Work collaboratively with staff, team player.
  • Works independently with little supervision.
  • Compiles monthly stats on NMAC media coverage.
  • Ensure all program deliverables are completed in a timely fashion and within budget.
  • Work collaboratively with outside partners.
  • A willingness to learn and take ownership of new responsibilities over time. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience

Minimum of five years of experience in media relations.  An advanced college degree is desired, but related work experience is more important.  

Elevated understanding of social determinants of health for subpopulations impacted by HIV and associated illnesses, specifically transgender/gender non-conforming individuals, women of color, and racial/ethnic minorities.

Passion to respond to HIV through a race-justice, language justice, gender justice lens.

Strong levels of transparent communication.
